Released almost one year apart, the iPhone 4 and the BlackBerry Bold 9930 are two impressive smartphones that are fully featured and equipped with powerful processors. I was interested in finding out if a business device such as the Bold 9930 can compete against the popular iPhone 4, so I compared features and capabilities.
In terms of design, these two devices have almost the same dimensions and weight. The Bold 9930 measures 115 x 66 x 10.5mm and weighs only 130 grams, so it’s slightly smaller and lighter than the iPhone 4 which measures 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm and weighs 137 grams. Both smartphones come with touchscreens able to support 16 million colors, but with different sizes and resolutions. The iPhone 4 is without doubt the winner when it comes to display comparison. That’s because it features a 3.5-inch LED-backlit IPS touchscreen with a resolution of 640 x 960 pixels which displays sharp and crisp images and text while the Bold 9930 comes with a 2.8-inch touchscreen with a 640 x 480 pixel resolution ( not that bad for a business device). For typing you will have to use an onscreen keyboard on the iPhone 4 and a full physical QWERTY keyboard on the BlackBerry 9930. You will like the BlackBerry’s keyboard because it’s well spaced and responsive.

The hardware department is represented by powerful processors able to run the operating system available and complex apps. The Bold 9930 is equipped with a 1.2GHz processor with 768MB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The iPhone 4 is powered by a 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and 8/16/32GB of storage. An extra point goes to the Bold 9930 because it offers microSD card support for cards of up to 32GB. Regarding the operating system, you will find on the iPhone 4 the rich-in-features iOS 4 upgradable to version 5 and on the Bold 9930 the latest BlackBerry OS 7.
I can’t forget about the multimedia department which offers nice cameras and media players. On the iPhone 4 you will find a VGA front-facing camera designed for video calls and a 5MP rear camera equipped with advanced camera settings and 720p HD video recording capabilities. The media player is well featured and able to support various file formats. On the other hand, the Bold 9930 includes only a 5MP camera with LED flash, geo-tagging and 720p video recording capabilities and a well featured media player.

You will discover on both devices various connectivity options including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, HTML and 3G. Bottom line, even if both devices are great smartphones that offer everything you would expect from a smartphone, the iPhone 4 stands out from the crowd.
