The iPhone 4 is a high end device, but it’s not free of bugs. It’s true that most of the times Apple figures out solutions for all the issues that are reported, but sometimes there’s nothing the manufacturer can do about it. So, if you are experiencing dropped calls on your iPhone 4, you should know that you aren’t the only one. In fact, after the iPhone 4 was released and people started using it, complaints regarding dropped calls flooded the Internet. After Apple became aware of these reports it looked into the mater and admitted that the iPhone has some issues that cause call dropping. It is said that if you don’t use the iPhone in the right position, signal will be lost and calls will be dropped.

If you wrongly position your hand, you will cover the area which accommodates the antenna dedicated to Wi-Fi, GSM and Bluetooth reception. As a result, signal strength is severely reduced and the likelihood of dropped calls increases dramatically. It’s good to know that the source of the problem has been detected, but we would also like to know how to solve the issue. Unfortunately, Apple can’t do much because it can’t change the hardware’s position. That’s why iPhone users were forced to find other solutions. Here are some possibilities that will help you remove the cause of your frustration.
You should start by controlling the way you hold your iPhone. If instead of your left hand, you use your right hand, you will have better chances to avoid dropped calls. That’s because you won’t cover anymore the region dedicated to the antenna. You will also have to make sure that during phone calls you avoid covering with your palm the exterior of your iPhone. Otherwise, you will obstruct the signal and still experience dropped calls.

Another option that I consider better is to buy a rubber bumper case. Such a case will cover the antenna, keeping it away from your hands, but because of its non-conductive properties won’t interfere with its functionality. If you go for this alternative, you will double benefits, because while avoiding dropped calls you will also protect your iPhone against bumps and scratches. Moreover, you won’t be limited to holding your iPhone only in a certain position and only with a certain hand.
A third choice that I find suitable is to upgrade your iPhone. It’s an expensive option, but if you are interested in the new features made available by the iPhone 4S, you should give it some thought. The 4S is an upgraded version and includes two antennas, so no more signal problems.
